City of Lier lies at the confluence of the Grote Nete and Kleine Nete rivers. Downstream from Lier, the river is simply called Nete. It merges with the Dijle at Rumst to form the Rupel, which eventually flows into the Zeeschelde.

The meandering Nete is a beautiful stretch of nature with lovely forests, reed beds and polders.

The Anderstad nature reserve (named after the former moated castle) is a haven of peace for many (water) birds. It consists mainly of former water meadows that are now largely under water and protect the city from flooding. The entire area is managed by Natuurpunt.
